So, you’re a new(ish) freelance writer or copywriter. Maybe you’ve even got a nice, simple portfolio set up with a few writing samples and client testimonials.
But now comes the question: How do you find more clients?
Well, here are a couple simple ways to leverage your portfolio to get more freelancing clients.
Personally, I’ve gotten most of my clients with these 4 strategies:
- Cold emails/DMs
- Facebook Group Prospecting
- Referrals
Cold emails and referrals are pretty self-explanatory. With cold emails, you’re reaching out to prospects to see if they need your help. With referrals, you’re asking previous/current clients if they know anyone else in their network who can benefit from your services.
I think out of all 4 of these strategies most writers don’t leverage Facebook or LinkedIn to their full potential… or they totally overcomplicate them.
And I get it, because I kind of suck at social media…
I mean, I literally have like 12 Twitter followers (please follow me?).
I say that because if I can get clients on FB and LI, so can you.
Here’s how…
1. Getting More Copywriting Clients On Facebook
- Join all copywriting job boards. The biggest is the Cult of Copy Job Board, but there are a bunch.
- Apply to gigs you’re a good fit for, and avoid red flag clients.

2. Getting More Copywriting Clients on LinkedIn
- Make sure your profile is set up correctly… describing who you are and what you do, with an easy way for prospects to find your samples or get in touch with you.
- Make lots of connections. DON’T pitch them immediately in their DMs.
- Post often. Doesn’t matter what it’s about. Doesn’t have to be “life-changing content.” Your goal is just to make “lots of impressions” and stay top of mind for when an opportunity arises in your prospects’ business. You will likely be the first person they think of, after appearing on their radar so many times. Remember, you’re playing the long game here.
